Important Update for EPHA Members: M-Pox (Monkeypox) Situation in Ethiopia
Dear Esteemed Members of the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA),
We would like to inform you about the recent developments regarding the M-Pox (Monkeypox) outbreak in Ethiopia, and the critical efforts underway to control its spread.
🦠 Current Epidemiological Situation
- As of May 31, 2025, Ethiopia has reported six confirmed cases of M-Pox.
- One M-Pox-related death has also been recorded.
- The initial cases were identified in Moyale, Oromia region, near the Kenyan border. The affected individuals include a 21-day-old infant and the child’s parents.
🛡️ National Response Efforts
The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) have activated a national emergency response, which includes the following:
- Enhanced Surveillance and Contact Tracing
- Rapid response teams have been deployed to trace contacts and monitor potential new infections.
- Strengthening Laboratory Capacity
- Expanded efforts to improve diagnostic infrastructure and capacity for timely testing.
- Public Awareness Campaigns
- National education campaigns are being rolled out to increase public understanding of M-Pox symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventive measures.
- International Collaboration
- The MoH and EPHI are working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC to ensure evidence-based response strategies and resource mobilization.

- Staying updated on the latest scientific and policy developments.
- Supporting community-level health education and risk communication efforts.
- Promptly reporting any suspected M-Pox cases to the appropriate health authorities.
